ABOUT US

On the banks where the Tweed and Rous Rivers meets, the Tumbulgum Tavern stands proud. Known fondly by locals as ‘The Tumby’, the tavern has been pouring pints and serving hearty meals for well over a century, a place where stories run as deep as the river itself.

The Tumby is the oldest licensed pub in the Tweed, first established in 1887 as the Metropolitan Hotel. In its early days, it offered rooms to farmers and passersby, boasting some of the finest liquor available, a billiard table, bath house, and even horse stables and paddocks. It was a welcome stop for sugar cane farmers and timber cutters, who’d wander in from the dirt tracks for a well-earned frothy.

A place steeped in character, the tavern has long been a meeting point for locals and travellers alike, where history lives on in the walls.

Over the years, The Tumby has seen it all, from floodwaters, fires, renovations and even the legendary 362kg fish. Through it all, its bones have stood strong, cementing its place as one of the Tweed’s most iconic destinations.

Today, the tradition continues. Whether you’re stopping in for a cold beer, a good meal or simply to soak in the sweeping riverside views from the deck, The Tumby is the place to slow down and stay a while.
